Why is he missing from the Assembly?

Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Minister of Health, Education, Finance, Tourism, Planning and Development and three to four more departments, has been missing from the Budget Session of the Assam LegislativeAssembly which started from 6th of February, 2018. In the previous year also he often used to skip the Assembly Sessions. After having the responsibilities of 9 to 10 Govt. departments, his absence is not befitting the dignity of the House. Many MLAs want to ask various questions and expect solutions relating to their respective constituencies. There is no rule that calls for ministers to be present in the House only on the date fixed for their respective departments. In some discussions, many issues or topics arise related to the Health, Education or Finance departments. In this situation, the topics don’t get so much importance due to the absence of the minister concerned.

Responsibility towards the people of Assam

Mr Debabrata Saikia, Leader of the Opposition, told a reporter that for this Session of the Assembly, the people of Assam are waiting and watching. They expect that their problems will be raised and discussed in the House and effective solutions will be provided. Due to Dr Sarma’s absence, those who want to ask questions either hesitate to do so or they get unsatisfactory answers from another minister who stands in forDr Sarma. In this Assembly Session, whenever an Opposition MLA asked a question, the minister who replied on behalf of Dr Sarma would say he didn’t know the facts and defer the answer to a future date.

He was elected to serve the people of Assam, not NEDA (North East Democratic Alliance)

Taking a dig at Dr Sarma, Mr Saikia said that the minister is dancing according to directives of the RSS and BJP High Command. He was elected by the people of Assam and holds charge of many government departments. But Dr Sarma is avoiding his responsibility by staying away from the Assembly to engage in party work. Was he elected to serve the BJP and RSS or the people of Assam?Mr Saikia added that he and his colleagues have taken up the issue with the Hon’ble Speaker, who assured to take action. Let’s see …
