FIRs for defamatory remarks on Debabrata
Guwahati, May 16: Youth Congress and NSUI members have lodged complaints at various police stations across Assam against a man for allegedly posting “defamatory” remarks about leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia on social media.
Vice-president of NSUI’s state unit Suman Kalyan Bora said Binanda Talukdar on Sunday not only made objectionable comments about Saikia but also against his late father and former Assam chief minister Hiteswar Saikia with an intention to defame the Congress.
Bora claimed that Talukdar’s Facebook comments were politically motivated.
“More than 20 FIRs have been lodged by Youth Congress and NSUI members at different police stations in the state seeking an investigation into the matter and arrest of the culprit,” said Bora, who lodged a complaint at Dispur police station here last evening.
Secretary of Assam Pradesh Youth Congress Inder Singh also lodged an FIR at Chandmari police station here last evening demanding Talukdar’s arrest.
When contacted for his comments, Saikia only said, “The law will take its own course.”
Talukdar’s Facebook profile states that he is a teacher at Dhing Public High School in Nagaon district and hails from Tihu in Nalbari district.
Cases of posting defamatory and abusive remarks on social media, particularly Facebook, has seen a sharp rise recently and the police had also made some arrests, including a deputy superintendent of police, in connection with such cases.
DSP Anjan Bora was arrested on April 29 for posting “derogatory” remarks about a woman MLA of the ruling BJP on Facebook.
A few days after Bora’s arrest, officer-in-charge of Lakhipur police station in Cachar district, Naba Kumar Borah, was suspended for allegedly posting objectionable remarks on Facebook against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
On May 11, Parimal Gore, a resident of Biswanath Chariali, was arrested for circulating a message on WhatsApp criticising Sonowal and influential students’ organisation AASU and again on May 14 Karbi Anglong police arrested a youth, Kangtir Bey, for allegedly posting defamatory remarks about Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) chief executive member Tuliram Rongang on Facebook.
