Water in 100 days if we win Guwahati Municipal Corporation, says Congress

Congress manifesto Guwahati Municipal 100 Days Water

GUWAHATI: Congress on Tuesday released its manifesto for the upcoming Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections with a promise to provide potable water to every household within 100 days if it wins. The grand old party has also promised to install streetlights in all roads in GMC areas within a month.

Congress said if it comes to power, the mayor and deputy mayor of GMC will be conferred the status of cabinet minister and minister of state. The GMC election will be held on April 22.

Assam PCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah alleged that the government is allowing illegal syndicates to operate in the city in the name of supplying water. “There is a syndicate which has taken over sourcing and distributing water. That’s why the government has not been able to fix a uniform rate for water supply,” said Borah.

He lambasted the BJP-led government for failing to deliver water to vast parts of the city at a time when floods are wreaking havoc. “It is shameful that cabinet ministers are spearheading the campaign on the directions of the CM, who could not even provide clean drinking water after tall talks in successive elections,” Borah added.
He blamed CM Himanta Biswa Sarma for the sufferings of the Guwahati residents, saying Sarma had been claiming himself as “de facto CM” for the last 20 years.

Senior Congressman and leader of opposition, Debabrata Saikia, alleged that law and order in Guwahati has deteriorated, evident from three murders in the last 48 hours.

Dijen Sarma, chairman of Assam PCC’s poll committee, said the coming elections is an opportunity for Guwahati’s residents to reclaim their city, their self-respect, amenities, lifestyle and a history that is thousands of years old.

BJP’s ally, AGP, also released its manifesto here on Tuesday. AGP president Atul Bora outlined the promises, assuring the residents land rights, pure drinking water, end of floods and more flyovers.
