GUWAHATI :The Assam-Mizoram border row figured in the Assam Assembly on Today. Congress MLAs Debabrata Saikia and Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha drew the attention of the state government towards the matter during zero hour. Purkayastha said because of the ongoing tension along the Assam-Mizoram border, people from Assam living in Mizoram are now fearing for their safety and are scared to come out of their homes.

Saikia suggested that an all-party Assembly delegation should visit the spot to take stock of the situation. Tension along Assam’s border with Mizoram in the Kachurthal area in Hailakandi district flared up in the past week over the construction of a rest shed by members of Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the apex students’ body of Mizoram. Assam’s parliamentary affairs minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said security has been beefed up to prevent any untoward incident.

“We want cordial relations with our neighbours and our security forces are exercising maximum restraint in dealing with the situation. Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal had spoken to Union home minister Rajnath Singh and his Mizoram counterpart about the situation and all necessary steps are being taken to defuse the tension.” AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam told reporters outside the Assembly that the North East Democratic Alliance (Neda) is fomenting trouble along the border to create trouble for the Congress government in Mizoram ahead of the Assembly polls there.

Students of Mizoram, led by the MZP, staged statewide protests in Aizawl on Monday seeking the resignation of the Congress government for allegedly failing to protect the state’s territory and students.
