Saikia suggestions welcomed

Guwahati, March 17: Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Ajit Singh has welcomed the suggestions made by the leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, to improve the performance of foreigners tribunals in the state.

Singh, in a letter to Saikia, praised his suggestions and said these were under consideration of the high court.

He assured Saikia that the high court would work on his suggestions for better administration of justice.

Saikia, who is also the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, had written to the Chief Justice on March 3 after he led a team of party MLAs to detention camps in Kokrajhar and Goalpara where he claimed that even some family members of freedom fighters were lodged after they were declared illegal migrants by the tribunals.

In his letter to the Chief Justice, Saikia had sought free legal aid for underprivileged people who were fighting cases in the foreigners tribunals so they are not declared foreigners.

“According to guidelines of the National Legal Services Authority, legal services may be provided to the poor and unlettered through the State Legal Services Authority and District Legal Services Authority. The learned tribunal may be directed to appoint an amicus curiae (friend of court), if the procedee is not represented by any advocate,” Saikia wrote in his letter.
