Saikia hints conspiracy behind NRC DRAFTING but doesn’t back MAMTA
Leader of the Opposition in Assam MrDebabrataSaikia suspects that a conspiracy by the BJP lies behind the publication of a truncated draft NRC on December 31 midnight. In an interview with a local TV channel, MrSaikia said that having failed to ensure delay in the NRC process because of the judiciary, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) authorities have created scope for suspicion by including only1.9 crore names in the first draft instead of 2.38 crore names as directed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court.

MrSaikia believes this shortfall is linked to mass omission of names in areas like Cachar. He feels that the motive for omitting these 48 lakh names is to create sectarian conflict among certain groups living in Assam. Mr.Saikia also thanks the various communities of Assam for supporting the NRC process and remaining patient even after so many names were left out at the last moment.
Mr.Saikia feels that the apprehension voiced by his party colleagues Ms. Sushmita Deb and Mr. Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha was an understandable reaction to the inexplicable area-specific omission of names from the draft NRC at the behest of the BJP.
