Opposition protests in Assam on demonetization anniversary

  • Blog

Guwahati, Nov 8 (UNI) The completion of first year of demonetization was
marked by Opposition political parties amidst protest meetings and processions across Assam today.

Main Opposition party Congress organized protest meets in different parts
of the state, including the chief minister’s constituency Majuli, Hojai,
Pathsala, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, in line with the party observing ‘black day’ countrywide.

The protest meeting at Guwahati was led by Leader of Opposition in the
state legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia and his deputy Rakibul Hussain,
among others.

As the Congress leaders and workers attempted to take out a rally after
the meeting, security personnel prevented them and took several leaders
and members, including Saikia and Hussain, into preventive custody.
The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) organized a separate
sit-in demonstration in Guwahati, led by its MLA Aminul Islam.
A separate protest meet was also organized by an united forum of 12
parties, including CPI, CPI(M) and Aam Aadmi Party, in Guwahati against
the demonetization move of the BJP-led NDA government in the Centre
last year.

The Opposition parties have alleged that the demonetization move did
not bring out any black money, rather pushed the economy into a downfall
and caused immense hardships for the common man.
