Leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia exposes BJP’s betrayal and their blunders

‘BJP’s false promises lie exposed

The BJP-led government headed by ‘national hero’ Mr Sabananda Sonowal and its allies AGP and BPF, who are supposed to be flag-bearers of regionalism, came to power with promises of safeguarding ‘jaati’ (nation), ‘maati’ (land), ‘bheti’ (foundation) and creating an Assam which is free of foreigners, fear and corruption.

Unfortunately, the BJP is now endangering all three assets, and thereby the very survival of Assam, by not only going all out to grant citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshi illegal migrants solely on the basis of communal considerations, but also by signing the Naga Framework Agreement with Naga militants for formation of a ‘greater Nagalim’.

The BJP’s duplicity and betrayal of Assam has been stripped bare for all to see by the comment made on Tuesday by the Union Railways Minister, Mr Rajen Gohain that Hindu Bangladeshis need not worry if their names do not appear in the NRC because the Centre will take steps to grant them citizenship. There is increasing apprehension among the people of Assam because the government headed by Mr.

Sonowal has reneged on its pre-election promise of implementing the cut-off date of March 25, 1971, for the purpose of detecting and deporting foreigners. Instead, the government is now hell-bent on extending the deadline for granting citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis up to December, 2014! The Assam Congress Legislative Party is totally opposed to the granting of citizenship based on religion because such a policy is against the provisions of the Constitution as well as the Citizenship Act.

BJP and their divisive agenda:

At the same time, the hypocrisy and double-dealing nature of Mr. Sonowal was made even more crystal clear to the public following the revelation made yesterday on TV by former MP and veteran BJP leader, Mr. Kabindra Purukayashta, that a team headed by state BJP president, Mr. Ranjit Das, has gone with the blessings of the Chief Minister and Mr. Hemanta Biswa Sarma to meet Central leaders to ensure that the interest of Hindu Bangladeshi migrants are protected in Assam, if necessary by means of issuing an Ordinance till such time as a Bill is passed in Parliament to make relevant changes in the Citizenship Act. So, in direct negation of pre-poll promises, Mr. Sonowal and his colleagues are poised to trample underfoot all the emotions, aspirations and self-respect of the indigenous people of Assam.

Similarly,  the fact that the BJP’s about-turn in the matter of deporting foreigners has been mutely accepted by the AGP, whose leaders were signatories to the Assam Accord, has served to expose the real face of the regional party as well. Will the AGP continue to offer tacit support to the BJP’s religion-based policy to grant citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis? If so, will it not utterly destroy the character and even the relevance of the party which was formed with the avowed intention of upholding regionalism and ridding Assam of all illegal migrants? Under the circumstances, the AGP’s ideology will become forfeit if it persists in continuing its alliance with the BJP.

‘Betrayal of Consensus’:

In the context of the Naga Framework Agreement signed by the Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, the ACLP would like to clarify that previous Congress governments at the Centre had signed several internal peace pacts and would surely have signed one with the Naga militants as well if those governments had desired popularity at any cost. However, the proposed NAGALIM had obvious impractical and unjustified aspects, which persuaded the erstwhile governments to give priority to the interests of neighbouring states and refrain from acceding the Naga militants’ demands. Therefore, not only the Congress party but all stakeholders are at a loss while trying to understand the basis upon which Mr. Modi signed the pact even though it entailed keeping all citizens of the country in the dark about its details. Moreover, the mysterious silence maintained on the issue by the Chief Minister of Assam, and the concurrent public announcement of “good news before Christmas for Nagas” by his Nagaland counterpart, has naturally stoked fears about the continuance of Assam’s territorial integrity. The ACLP reaffirms it commitment to protecting the territorial and administrative integrity of Assam and also achieving the goal of resolving the foreigners issue in accordance with the provisions of the Assam Accord. The ACLP also wishes to caution the state government to ensure that the interests of Assam are not sacrificed under any circumstance.
