Leader of Opposition demands Special Assembly session on Assam Accord

Guwahati, May 13: The Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia on Sunday has urged the Chief Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, to advise the Governor and the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly to summon a special session of the House to pass a pending resolution relating to upholding the provisions of the Assam Accord of 1985.

Saikia in the press communiqué mentioned that the situation prevailing in the state over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 made it imperative for the House to pass without delay the pending private member’s resolution in question, which was moved by Congress member Abdul Khaleque.

He added that a united stand by all legislators of Assam appeared all the more necessary following the escapist attitude displayed by CM Sonowal during his interaction with a delegation of editors on Saturday.

Saikia also pointed out that the Chief Minister had said that he would quit if pushed, but failed to assert that he would stand up and fight for protecting the interests of Assam and its people.

Lastly, Saikia emphasized that the Chief Minister must take the required initiative in this matter because he was the leader of the House and dates for Assembly sessions and list of business was fixed as per his advice to the Governor and Speaker.
