GUWAHATI, Sept 26: Leader of Opposition in Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia has raised the demand for a high-level inquiry into the death of six labourers of Talap Tea Estate near Doomdooma after consuming country liquor and compensation for the next of kin of the victims.

Talking to the media in Guwahati on Tuesday, Saikia said: “The State Government has legalized country liquor by branding them. Since the six labourers died after consuming country liquor, there should be a high-level inquiry to ascertain the cause of their death. The State Government should also pay compensation to the next of kin of the deceased.”

Saikia rued the reported violence in the recent past during college elections in the State. “There has been a surge in violence after the ABVP coming to electoral politics in the educational institutions in the State. The State Government should take steps to check such developments,” he said, and added: “It’s unfortunate that some employees of the State Government haven’t got their salaries before the Durga Puja.”

Saikia expressed his shock at the State Government not taking any action as yet on the threat to the lives of three Congress MLAs by one Nilutpal through the social media. He also slammed the State Government for arresting KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi under the National security Act (NSA), and said: “It’s not a healthy trend for democracy.”
