Cong takes stock of NRC update work
Guwahati, Jun 6 (UNI) A team of Opposition Congress legislators, led by Leader of Opposition in state legislative assembly Debabrata Saikia, today visited the office of the state coordinator for updating National Register of Citizens (NRC) here to take stock of progress of work.
The Congress team consisting of six legislators met state coordinator Prateek Hajela and discussed at length the status of updating the NRC.
The work of updating the NRC is going on under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had announced December 31 this year as the deadline for publishing the draft NRC.
Mr Saikia, talking to reporters later, said the Congress is apprehensive that the deadline will be met with and expressed displeasure at ‘slow pace of work’.
Meanwhile, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad (AJYCP) today staged demonstrations in different parts of the state, demanding timely and correct NRC.
